There are a lot of things I love about writing fiction, but perhaps one of the best things is getting to know a new character. Especially a narrator, a person I’ll have the privilege of following around and learning inside and out, and yet, still be surprised by, if I pay close and careful attention. If I really bend my heart and mind to him or her and listen. It’s the best kind of falling in love: all those wonderful quirks and details that come slowly to the surface, if I’m patient enough to let them, and I find them soft and sudden as the first words I heard my newest narrator speak: “Sometimes, the sky brightens backwards, starting west out over the Ionian Sea, and I sit in the highest room of my father’s house and watch the morning peel open towards the Aegean.”
